Does the solution manager bring added value in case of only one *.vipprj file?

No. The advantage is when you have several projects (in one larger "project").

I assume the solution manager is not applicable for the webRPC example?
It uses many project files.

It is indeed usable for the webRPC examples, in fact there is already a solution file (rpc.vipsln) in the directory.
